FAIR TRADE

Whilst Tea People are not certified as Fairtrade, they are, in fact, much more than that. The concept of 'fair trade' was created to protect the interest of small-scale farmers and to make sure that they are getting a fair price for their produce.

Most tea gardens however, are owned by wealthy individuals or corporations that manage to sell their teas at a premium due to the demand supply gap for high quality teas. The poor are the workers and the labourers in the tea gardens, who subsist on a minimal daily wage and would therefore gain little or no benefit from the Fairtrade certification awarded to their employers.

Tea People work directly with the poor and serve primarily the educational needs of the children of tea garden workers or those who depend on the region for their livelihood. For this they put aside 50% of their net profit and therefore consider their operations as much more than being fair trade.

INGREDIENTS

Organic camomile.

Naturally caffeine free.

Because camomile can cause uterine contractions which could lead to miscarriage, the US National Institute of Health recommends that pregnant women should avoid camomile tea. Also not recommended for people with ragwort allergy or people taking blood thinners.

Tea People was founded by Neeraj and Vishaka, a husband and wife team who lived in the beautiful tea growing region of Darjeeling in India before moving to the UK in 2005. In 2009 the couple discovered that a school in Darjeeling was in urgent need of some repairs and assistance. They knew of the school which was located amidst the tea gardens of their home town, and served the children of tea garden workers and other impoverished villagers in the area.

Neeraj and Vishaka attributed their own success to the education they had received in India and firmly believed that education should be available to all. Knowing the poverty that existed in that area, they decided to help and raised the required funds to provide the much needed assistance. While it was extremely satisfying to be able to help, the pair quickly realised that the scale of the problem was much bigger and way beyond that one school. Also, that fundraising alone was not a very sustainable way of addressing the issue.

That's when the idea for Tea People was born. Neeraj and Vishaka wanted to address the issue of poverty in and around the underserved tea growing regions of the world so decided to set up the company as a social enterprise. The brand donates at least 50% of their net profit to sister charity New Leaf Trust, who help fund educational and social projects in these regions.

So put the kettle on, become one of the 'tea people' and help make tea into a powerful medium for bringing about a positive social change.
