About the Brand
Pachamama, which means Earth Mother in Quechua (the ancient language of the Incas), began in 1990 when the brand started trading goods bought from the Andean Mountains of South America.
Since those early days, Pachamama has developed strong and sustainable relationships with its suppliers based on mutual respect for all links in the production chain - from sourcing and collecting raw materials to designing and marketing finished products. The brand has been loyal to its original philosophy and has been working with some of the same producers for over 20 years - ensuring continuous and solid economic and social growth for a large number of people.
The brand visits and communicates with its suppliers regularly, and consequently production is based around the knitters' planting times. If necessary, Pachamama pays producers in advance or supply them with raw materials, to prevent any debt incurring and to ensure workers are paid on time. As well as outworkers, approximately 100 people are employed in family-run factory environments; hand finishing, making hand framed knitting, felting and packing garments. Every worker receives training and benefits from above average conditions and pay, and men and women are treated equally and paid according to ability. No children are exploited, and everyone is treated with respect.
The majority of Pachamama's suppliers in Nepal are home-workers, producing garments around their commitments to their fields and families.
Since 1996 Pachamama has been proud to be a member of the British Association for Fair Trade Shops & Suppliers (BAFTS).
Based in London, Pachamama donates a minimum of 10% of the profit on all sales to Net4Kids, an international charity working in Nepal, whose mission is to give underprivileged children a better future through sustainable help.
