The Marisol collection is produced by Hope Jewellery (formerly the Zoe Project) and is Just Trade's longest running fair trade partnership.
Over the last 10 years, the project has grown enormously and is now based in four areas of Peru; two in the shanty towns in Lima (La Tablada and California) and two provincial cities, (Ayacucho and Cajamarca).
In these areas there is a lack of part time, fairly paid work, especially for women - the options are either working as a housekeeper in the wealthy part of town or in a textile factory - both of which involve lengthy travel, long hours and leaving their children unattended or in the care of the wider family.
Over the last ten years, Just Trade has worked hand in hand with Hope Jewellery to provide part time, fairly paid work that the women can do from home, or close to home. This has made a significant difference to their household incomes, meaning the women have been able to improve their homes, pay for medical treatment and educate their children, as well as spend more time with their families. Just Trade is currently providing regular work for more than thirty women.
Just Trade has also provided extensive training in technique and design, which has given the artisans the confidence to design and make their own products. The artisans in Peru now specialise in making beautifully crocheted silver jewellery, crocheted cotton brooches, and contemporary brass jewellery.
Just Trade collaborates with artisans around the world to create stylish, desirable handmade jewellery and accessories. The Company was founded in 2006 by jewellery designer Laura Cave; the idea born out of her first hand contact with real people in the developing world, and her recognition that in order for small, fair trade projects to be sustainable, they need a long-term route to market for their goods.
Combining traditional craft skills and materials with expert knowledge of contemporary jewellery and accessories, Just Trade have developed ranges of unique pieces with strong appeal in the European market. From exquisite crocheted silverwork to beautifully carved tagua pendants, their distinctive products are made with care and skill from locally-sourced and ethical materials where possible.
Just Trade currently works with eight groups of fair trade artisans in Peru, Ecuador, India and Vietnam.
